Hi, I'm Jason Atienza. I'm 16 and a sophomore at Reseda High School's Science Magnet. I want to share my journey while undergoing a bone marrow transplant due to aplastic anemia/dyskeratosis congenita.

Single Speed
So cool! They brought a bike to my room today. I'll try to get on it everyday to get my exercise. I probably will get to bike more in here than I've done outside in months.

My Squad
This was my last checkup until I get admitted on Thursday. I met with my doctors, Dr Gupta and Dr Hofstra. I am very grateful to them for taking great care of me and getting me this far. Dr Gupta is one of the nicest doctors I've ever met (I've met quite a few!).
Dr. Hofstra has been my primary Hematologist since I've been going to CHLA. Just to note, his favorite car is a viper. I know because he always asks me what's mine, every time I visit. I can't thank these doctors enough for their hard work and for what they have done for me.

Frozen (the movie), allergies and a W
Finally got my bone marrow aspiration that was postponed from Friday. I wasn't nervous at all since I already have been poked many times and this was my fourth aspiration. This time I got a wristband that alerted the doctors that I may have an allergic reaction to platelets. While waiting, I had to endure watching Frozen. And yes, I sang along with the movie. All in all, today was a Win.

Hanging out with my cousins
After the long week I had a really fun Saturday. My aunt and cousin came down from SF to visit me and I met up with my other cousins at the Farmers Market and it was a blast! I had a ton of laughs that night with my crazy cousins. I love them!. We ate really good food and got a big bucket of cookies for dessert.

No Go on Biopsy
So this was the last day at CHLA for the week. My dad and I both woke up really early to get there. When we were there we went straight to the infusion room again. This time I got platelets transfusion. It only took 30-45 mins to finish. Just when we thought we were done, I got an allergic reaction to the transfusion and resulted in trouble breathing and hives. After the complication was over we went to the ASC department and was rejected for the bone marrow biopsy due to little weezing in my lungs. ugh..

My first blood transfusion ever.
Back the next day at CHLA for a neuropsych evaluation and a blood transfusion. The evaluation took about 4 hrs and they asked me questions about designs, memorizing words, and personal questions. After that was done I was being measured for my body size for later radiation. In the afternoon, I had my first transfusion of 300cc of blood which took nearly 5 hrs! A really long day.

Meeting with Dr Dietz and my new Dodger Jersey
Back at CHLA to meet Dr. Dietz, my surgeon, and the rest of the BMT team, to further explain the procedures and consent. I had two blood draws that day and was poked on each side of the arm. Later that night my Dad and I received our long waited customized Dodger jerseys.
